“Our company was founded 70 years ago. Since the 1st Canton Fair, we have been expanding overseas markets with the help of the platform,” said Wang Hai, General Manager of Shanghai Minmetals Development Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “SMM”), at the 125th Canton Fair.

The year of 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of SMM as well.

“We should be strivers-oriented”, said Wang Hai. As a national brand with a long history, SMM has always worked hard and constantly adjusted its development strategy to adapt to the development of national and international economy as well as the needs of the market.

Currently, SMM is exploring specialized operation, market-oriented operation mechanism and global objectives, and transforming itself into a professional product supplier and comprehensive trade service provider.

“We want to make progress together with the motherland and seek long-term development.” Wang Hai believes that enterprises need to change with the times, conduct marketing, update products, and pursue development according to market demand.

“For example, coated plates of steel are constantly changing, from simple zinc plating to color coating to galvanizing aluminum-zinc alloy.” SMM is actively innovating the styles and materials of its products, creating a good corporate image with the help of the Canton Fair, and trying to get market penetration and attract customers with good products.

“Our company is growing vigorously. The platform functions of the Canton Fair are also being strengthened.” In Wang Hai’s office, there still hangs a contract signed with guests from the Middle East in 1959.

Since its inception, SMM has gradually shifted from providing traditional hardware and mineral products and engaging in simple import and export activities to providing customers with professional products and comprehensive trade services.

At present, SMM’s international sales network has covered more than 3,000 customers in more than 100 countries and regions. In recent years, its total international trade reaches USD 1 billion.

“Survey and research are a must.” Wang Hai believes that enterprises should conduct comprehensive research on different markets before “going global”.

“Enterprises also hope to, with the support of national policies, expand overseas markets and contribute their strength to China’s prosperity in the future,” said Wang Hai.
